Compare the 2019 Mazda3 to the 2020 Toyota Corolla in Glendale

The Mazda3 is a sporty compact sedan with sharp handling, lots of standard and available features, and an immaculate aesthetic that's difficult to match, especially at this price point. With a premium upscale cabin, suite of advanced safety and driver assistance technologies, and comfortable seating, it makes an excellent daily driver for Glendale commuters.

The 2020 Toyota Corolla is new on the scene and sporting several improvements over previous generations--and those improvements have drawn some comparisons to the Mazda3. However, upon closer inspection, one can see the Corolla still ultimately falls short of the Mazda3's high bar.

2019 Mazda3 vs. 2020 Toyota Corolla: Powertrain

The 2019 Mazda3 offers Glendale drivers more get-up-and-go for their daily journeys than the 2020 Toyota Corolla. Its motivation comes from a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that sends 186 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. Hatchback models can option a manual transmission if you prefer to personally control your gear changes.

Conversely, the 2020 Toyota Corolla has a difficult time keeping up. Its 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine makes just 139 horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque. Upper Corolla trim levels get a stronger 2.0-liter engine, but even that gets left behind by the Mazda3, putting out just 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque.

For enhanced handling on low-traction surfaces, the 2019 Mazda3 also offers available all-wheel drive on all but the base package. The 2020 Toyota Corolla comes only with front wheel drive, with no AWD option.

2019 Mazda3 vs. 2020 Toyota Corolla: Versatility

You have places to go and people to see, and if you have lots of cargo to haul with you, you don't want to worry about having enough space. The Mazda3 sedan has more trunk space than the Toyota Corolla; but, if you have lots of supplies, or even a pet to carry around, you're better served by the versatility of a hatchback.

The Mazda3 hatchback offers 20.1 cubic-feet of space with all the seats up. Fold the rear seats down, and max capacity more than doubles to 44.5 cubic-feet. There is a 2019 Corolla hatchback, but it only offers 17.8 cubic-feet of space behind the rear seats. Folding the seats down doesn't improve space that much, due to its shorter wheelbase.

2019 Mazda3 vs. 2020 Toyota Corolla: Technology

The Mazda 3 offers Glendale drivers plenty of tech features at all package levels, including an 8.8-inch infotainment system with Bluetooth, voice commands, eight-speaker audio, and smartphone integration support via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Preferred trims and above even come with a 12-speaker Bose premium audio system.

The Toyota Corolla offers a standard 7-inch touchscreen (upgradeable to eight inches) with Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay integration. Curiously, Android Auto is conspicuously absent from the features list at any trim level. Six-speaker audio is standard, and a nine-speaker JBL system is an option, but it's not standard on any of the trim levels.
